The Andrew Freedman Home and ArtsyWindow presents The Living Room Kitchen
Taking place in the former living room, now gallery, of the Andrew Freedman home, The Living Room Kitchen, curated by Kiara Cristina Ventura, is an exhibition which centers around the spaces of gathering in a home. The exhibition hones in on the weight and memories these spaces hold —the space they hold in the artists’ childhood, memories, family traditions, and emotions. With works by 11 local artists of color, The Living Room Kitchen dissects how these rooms house experiences of celebration, consumption, and family rituals. At the same time, they can be places of trauma, family hardships, economic hardships, serious conversations, and life changing events that mold one’s identity. Connecting to wider issues around housing, gentrification, and displacement, the subject of home is essential to speak about now more than ever.
Using a variety of mediums including photography, painting, sculpture, assemblage, and mixed media, the artists collectively portray how these domestic spaces reveal one's class, nationality, culture, religion, spirituality, economic status, and mentality. Composed of Black, Latinx and Afro-Latinx artists and mostly Bronx artists, The Living Room Kitchen is ultimately in conversation with the homes and experiences of many families and individuals surrounding the Andrew Freedman Home — the local Bronx community.
